Part 2 and 3 of final

Part 2:

sbuonomo-
This was one of my top five. There were many reasons for this, first off I really liked the executive summary, it gave good information about what the organization was. Next there was a lot od detail in the planning section, there is a ton of graphs, charts, and videos. This really shows how  much time was taken on this. Many good ideas behind how to get the word out there on this organization.  The idea of using social media is a good one, there were great reasons behind why those websites would help, such as facebook.

Emily 270-
There were many good things about this white paper. First the summary had a lot of detail. It talked about the different foods that they have, and types. This really showed that Emily knew what she was talking about. Her plans were also very good because of the detail. It was apparent that she really knew of the company, she talked about the annual Park Ave. Festival that they participate in. Since they already get a lot of customers that way she came up with the idea of adding a lot more advertising for the event. If they advertised on things like twitter, or facebook even  more people would go to the festival.

MMika 270-
This was another really well done paper. There were many reasons behind this, one of which was the use of the photos. The photos really helped add a deeper meaning to the paper. I like how this company helps kids out at a young age and teaches them, teamwork. Another goodthing was the videos in it. These were actual videos from the frozen ropes website. This made it much more personal, the ideas also added to it. Events are the best types of ideas because they get people in the community to go and come together. Having a travel league is alost a good idea, these teams are all over the place

Nicole-
This was another of my favorite white papers. I thought that it gave really great detail, and the photos of the actual deli added detail to it. The summary was especially good, it talked directly about what the deli specializes in. The summary also had a lot of quotes from public relations online. This was one of the first people I saw who actually had a lot of quotes from the book. I liked the ideas that were presented, adding all of those componants to the website would bring in more customers.

Tommy and Dan-
This was the last of my favorite white papers. I really liked this white paper because it had a lot of detail, clear ideas, and it was for a great organization. The summary had a lot of information about the assignment, and the company. This was one of the only white papers to encorporate both the assignment, and information on the organization. It had good ideas for the website. It really makes sense to separate the website so it is not as confusing.

Part 3:

I define PR, as a means to get information out to an everchanging world.BOOM THATS IT I DO NOT NEED 500 words……

Just kidding that is not all.

There are many reasons why I believe this. The main reason is just by looking at how technology has changed over the years, and how that change has effected how information is reached to the public. Long ago in a galaxy far, far away people got news and advertisements from the radio. Even though that may seem strange to my generation, to that generation it was new and exciting. People were not used to getting information so easily, becuase of this they would believe anything that they heard coming out of it. When the War of the Worlds was first broadcasted in 1938 people went insane. They thought that the earth was actually under attack, they did not know any better because they were not used to that technology being used as a means of information and news. Newspapers have always been used so they are not as interesting anymore because people can just go online to read something. I still believe that reading is better than having to watch a video of someone telling you something, but that is just me.

Even though the environment public relations is in is changing, it is still done the same basic way. Yes, Now it works online and has to work around new companies and knew things like blogs, but there are four things that average person in public relations goes by when they think of knew and innovative ideas. 1) Social Psychology and the quest for the public mind. This means understand what the public understands and likes, by doing this you can manipulate them into believing what you want them to believe. 2) Uneseen engineers: Biography of an idea. The idea behind this is to not let the public know where an idea came from, let those that came up with the idea sit in silence so they do not need to be question about it. It is not their idea to talk to the press, and the public, their job is coming up with ideas. The job of Public Relations persons is that. 3) Modern pipelines of persuasion. This goes along with the first, where it is good to use manipulation to get the public to believe something or to act a certain way. 4) Optical illusions. This is what is used to mask an idea so it does not seem bad if in fact it really is. This not to say that Public Relations people are bad, they are jsut trying to get their product or what have you out to the public in the best way. They are trying to get as many people to endulge in what their selling. That is what I believe PR is.

Many do not know what PR is..

After the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, Michael Phelps held the record for the most Olympic gold medals. He has won fourteen, nine in individual events, and also has the record for the most Gold Medals at a single Olympic games, he won eight at the Beijing Olympics. In early 2009 a picture of Michael Phelps smoking marijuana from a bong surfaced. A person from the party got a hold of the photo and decided to sell it to all of the big magazine names. After this happened Phelps was torn apart by many people. This was because he is in the public eye. Being in the public eye means that people, mainly young children look up to you. If kids see him smoking, they may try it themselves. Phelps job being a record holding Olympic champion doesn’t help. Since he has shown that he is a winner it will show kids that there is nothing wrong with smoking because you can still go out there and win fourteen medals at various Olympics. After this unfolded Phelps had to go on damage control. Phelps admitted to “behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment”, he had to release a public statement to show people that he knew what he did was wrong.

The ethical issue that comes in to play is the fact that someone took the photo and gave it to the press. Not only that but that person also told the press that Phelps knew exactly how to smoke and had clearly done it before. This person and the press could have tarnished Phelps career and ruined his chances at winning another Olympic gold medal. After the picture surfaced the authorities got involved, and were even thinking about bringing Phelps to trail, until they figured out they didn’t have enough evidence against him. Phelps was also suspended from swimming competitively for three months, and was dropped from Kellogg’s cereal as a spokesman. This event gained a reputation on Collegehumor.com. Many people invented motivational posters from the picture. Even though free speech falls into the principles of Public relations they need to really look at the ethics behind it when talking about an event. What they say can change the way a person is viewed, and could ultimately get them to lose their job.

White Paper

Executive Summary:

Glen Loch Mill Restaurant and Catering Company has been serving the citizens of Jamesville, New York for over thirty nine years. It has become a staple to the community as a family owned business that will always be run by a member of the Barr family. In the early 1970’s a young man by the name of Timothy Barr bought the old mill, and turned it into the popular restaurant it is today. For the last couple of years, Tim’s daughter, Callie has been running the restaurant. Catering has never been higher, and with the new head chefs that have been coming in and going, the Glen Loch is in need of a new website. The Glen Loch used to specialize in burgers, fish, meat, and spaghetti. But, with the new chefs they have changed the menu. Spaghetti is no longer served unless someone asks. The menu now specializes in Fish, Sandwiches, Salads, and Pizza.

With all of the changing at the Glen Loch it is imperative to make a new website. One that will make it easier for people to see the menu, look at the food, and be able to make reservations, for dinner and catering. It should be user friendly this is a very important part of Public Relations online. Internet is a very important part of public relations. By having a website it gives the customers a chance to look at the food, and see if it is a place they want to eat at. It is used as a form of communication, instead of having to do in and see if it will be very busy, they can look on the website and see how many reservations there are. The content in Public Relations Online is there to show how to make a website look good, so customers want to go to the business.

The Ideas

As Kelleher said in Public Relations Online “The function of public relations is connected with the concept of interactivity. Online public relations is more a matter of what people are doing with online media technologies, then what the technologies are doing to the people.”  This quote is very important when thinking about how to help this company with their website. These ideas will be used specifically to make the website user friendly. It is all about the customers, the site should be attractive, and welcoming. But should mainly be easy to use and easy for a customer to find what their looking for. Before stating my ideas it is useful to first look at The Four-Step process. This process goes over the four step common approach to public relations. It is what I used while figuring out how to make the website more PR friendly. The steps say to first start out by doing research, then planning, then action and communication, and finally evaluation. To research, I looked at the website and tried to think of what would be useful and what I as a customer would like in a restaurants website. The next steps I put together. Once I had my first ideas, I thought of ways to make the website user friendly from the concepts that Kelleher mapped out in Public Relations Online. With this, I have pinpointed my ideas to ones that would help the customer, and bring in more patrons.

The first thing that would help the site is if there were more pictures of the restaurant.

There is animation, and a photo of Tim the old owner when the Glen Loch first opened but that is it. It says on the homepage that people can have picnics. It doesn’t show where people would have picnics, or even parties. In the way that the world is moving people would rather be able to see a picture of the picnic area, instead of having to go to the Glen Loch directly to see it. Since the menus have been changing with new staff, and there are new specials. There should be photos of the food. If it is done well and not tacky then it will help bring in more customers because they will know exactly what they want to eat. This means that the photos shouldn’t look bad and the food should look appealing.

The next idea I have has to do with building relationships. It does not mean relationships in the traditional sense. It leans towards the business side and its relationships. In chapter five of Public Relations Online Kelleher talks about what makes relationships important between a business and its customers, and how to make that relationship even stronger. “The state which exists between an organization and its key publics in which the actions of either entity impact the economic, social, political, and or cultural well being of the other entity.” In this case the impact of the entity, being The Glen Loch would be the economic side. By creating good relationships with its customers they will go back there to eat, and even tell their friends about it. This leads into my next idea, creating some sort of message board. This board is something that customers, can use to interact with the owner, and workers of Glen Loch. But also, interact with each other. In this board people could say what meal they ate, and say if they liked it or not. Even if they say they didn’t like it, it will show the customers that The Glen Loch wants to improve. It shows that they want to make sure that they give the customer the best meal that they can.

From a PR viewpoint it is very strong because it shows that The Glen Loch wants to keep up with the times, and make it easier for people to comment on their meal. Some people even if they don’t enjoy their meal could be too nice to want to say anything to the waiter or waitress. By adding the message board it will give people the freedom to say what they want to say without feeling uncomfortable. People will also be able to comment on other people’s posts. Since the Glen Loch is not only a restaurant, but a catering company, they should have an application on the site where customers can make reservations for dinner, and for catering. With the growing technology people don’t want to have to call up the restaurant and talk to them. By adding this, it will make it incredibly easier for customers. Many people now have phones that can go online, if a customer is at work and can’t make a call then they could go on the website see if it’s very busy and make a reservation. These ideas will really help make the website more customer friendly, and it will increase the relationships between the Glen Loch and its patrons.

Conclusion:

The point of this is to make the website easy for customers to use, and to create a good relationship between the Glen Loch and its customers. The ideas I came up with were connected to interactive media. A message board has people literally interacting with each other. They can make comments on other people’s messages and posts. Kelleher gives some facts from surveys that were given out to people in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s about online media and if it was meant for public relations. This was found, “Online media offer more opportunities for public relations practitioners to engage in two-way communication and broader dialogue between organizations and publics. Public media are important tools in issues management.” With these findings it shows that even in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s when the internet wasn’t nearly as important and central as it is today, people still believed that the internet made communicating with each other much easier. These ideas will fulfill the customers wishes, and make the process easier.

1. The first point Brooks makes is about the narrow definition of talent, and how the system rewards those who can be amass technical knowledge. Over the years smart people have made mistakes because they didn’t understand the context in which they were operating. This to me it sounds like people are getting jobs that their not really qualified for or jobs that don’t have to do with what they studied in school. I do agree with this for one certain reason. My oldest brother Chris majored in Sports management and he is the head of human resources in his office. Now he has gotten a couple of promotions which mean that he has been doing well. His job has nothing to do with his major, this happens to many people. Once they graduate they realize they won’t get the job they had hoped for so they have to expand their search. Some get jobs for things that they don’t understand and they don’t succeed. This isn’t because they aren’t smart its because they got a job for something they weren’t made to get.

2. New system has changed social chasms. There isn’t just one big difference between people there is many. An example is the lifestyle of college educated people are vastly different from patters in other classes. I somewhat agree with this because those that went to college get jobs that those who didn’t go to college can get. Before having a college degree was something that put people ahead of others, now it is something that is essential to get a job that can pay for normal lifestyles. One reason I wouldn’t agree is because many people in lower classes are getting financial aid or other help to make sure that they don’t fall behind the rest of the country simply because of social class.

3. Leadership class solidarity is weaker. I completely agree with this. Politicians have their workers come up with rumors about another candidate. Sometimes the rumors aren’t to harsh but other times they can cause a politician to lose an election. Smear campaigns and commercials ripping apart a candidate is something that is seen throughout campaigns.

4. Time horizons have shrunk. There is less emphasis on steady gradual change and more emphasis on big swing. I agree with this, the last three presidents have all put in place something that caused a change in the government and the country. Bill Clinton tried to change health care. Bush started two wars, he said there was weapons of mass destruction which later was proven to help America control the middle east. Now with our latest Commander in Chief, Obama, we have him trying to transform health care, energy, and the war in Afghanistan.

5. Society is too transparent. I don’t agree with this very much. I agree in the fact that the government is saying that they are more open and are giving us all the information they know. But it is more that they are giving us the information they want us to now. It is known that public relations is controlled and manipulated, people just need to look at an issue from an unbiased point. The government has many things that they don’t tell citizens, anything from the War, to Aliens.

Coda: The Public and Its Problems

The final section of Ewen’s book PR , looks at the beginning of PR with Bernays, through when the book was written in 1996.  Even though this section is about notes for the new millennium, it touches on the changes of public relations throughout the 1990’s.  The beginning of the section talks about how when Ewen met with Bernays he saw two different men. The first, understood “public sphere”, contested ground public relations as a historic response to the public who wanted answers. The second, saw the public as mass of photoplasm, this meant that it was a raw material that in the hands of a skilled manipulator could be changed at will. The most important part of this section is toward the end. This sections discusses the ways that democracy was used and not used in public relations around 1996, but it also touches on ways to reawaken democracy.

In order for the United States to use public relations in a democratic form, citizens need to first realize they are in a democracy. Citizens need to understand that not everything they believe is what is really right. The apparatus for molding the public mind and for appealing to the public eye has become increasingly popular. With new technology creates new forms of using public relations in everyday life. There needs to be a reawakening of democracy when it comes to public relations. In 1940 Paul Cherington argued about opinion polling. Opinion polling was important because it helped make the citizens feel like they were connected to the issues. With it, popular democracy could be realized. Since public relations is something that people can’t escape it is important to add democracy to it. There are many ways to reawaken democracy.  A free circulation of ideas and debate is critical to the maintenance of an aware public. This means that the ways of enhancing the circulation of ideas needs to be developed. It needs to be available to everyone, of any social class. That way classes come together like a democracy, instead of falling apart. The last thing that Ewen discusses in media and visual literacy. Media and visual literacy sharpen people’s ability to decipher the world. Media literacy should be understood as an education of techniques that can magnify the possibility of meaningful public interaction.

People need to rediscover themselves in others. They need to see their concerns, and aspirations in other people. Many people may have the same problems. This leads into recent examples. The closest example I thought of would have to be the presidential race of 2008. This was the first time that things like facebook were prominent in an election. The younger voters would create groups for their favorite candidate. There were even pages that had certain issues that people wanted the candidates to discuss at their debates. Facebook has public relations all over it. There are ads to all types of businesses, polls, and pages for politicians. Being a politician and using facebook is extremely important because it is something that so many people use. It has become a place that people spend a lot of their time. If your a politician just by having a page shows that you are “hip”, and understand the time period. Public relations is something that won’t go away, with the increases of technology and expertise it will only become more prominent in our society.

We Speak! Orality of the Collective

The Pseudo Event I attended was the We Speak! lecture. The purpose of this Pseudo Event was to focus on how literature is used as a traditional tool for collective empowerment of African American people. The presenters were David Shakes, a playwright and artistic public intellectual. The other was Dr. Gaya Shakes, a cultural critic. I went to this event for another class, African American Literature but the event possessed the characteristics of a Pseudo event that Boorstin outlined. The first part that Boorstin talks about is how the events aren’t spontaneous, they are planned. The pseudo event I went to was in fact planned for several weeks. It also had a flyer that came with it.2011 GATHERING OF GRIOTS LECTURE in African American Culture – flyer

The second characteristic is that the event is planted primarily for the immediate purpose of being reported or reproduced. Therefore its occurrence is arranged for the convenience of the reporting or reproducing media. At the even I went to I don’t see it being on any news, be in the newspaper, or on any radio show. It was held primarily to help students gain a greater understanding of African American Literature. There wasn’t any cameras or reporters. The only “reporters” were those in the audience, and those that took notes. Another characteristic of a pseudo event has to do with if its relation to the underlying reality of the situation is ambiguous. Its interests arise largely from this very ambiguity. This event was ambiguous. I had no idea of what to expect. On the flyer it says “there is power in the word”. What word? That was what I wondered before I went to the event. It didn’t talk so much about a word, as it talked about the fact that to be human you need to know how to read and write. This was interesting, it grabbed my attention. What did that mean, to be human? It meant that in order to really understand a persons background, and where they came from, they need to be able to learn about it. They need to be able to read and write, so they can write about whatever their interested in. The last characteristic is that it is intended to be a self-fulfilling prophecy. The whole flyer is about speaking, and how it is a huge part of African American Culture. I didn’t eve think about it until I looked at the flyer, then I really thought to myself how literature is used to help people express what their feeling.

There are many ways for restaurants to get customers. An easy way is to show them not only a menu, but to also show them the food. This helps to get customers hungry, and get them to want the food.
